From chasing the Northern Lights to soaking in hot springs, this 4-day Alaska itinerary will guide you through a comfortable yet adventure-filled journey into the heart of Alaska. So, let’s jump right in.

Day 1: Arrival in Fairbanks & Northern Lights

Fairbanks is in the middle of the Aurora viewing belt that cuts through the Alaskan naturescape. And if you are chasing Aurora, we recommend that you fly right in rather than traveling from Anchorage. This is especially tricky in winters.

So, you begin your adventure in Fairbanks, the gateway to the Northern Lights. Upon arrival, settle in and prepare for a cozy night of aurora viewing.

Once you are all set, wait for it to get dark and then head out into the wilderness. There are some popular spot for viewing the lights where people go, park their cars and just wait for the show to begin. A little caveat: some spots are more popular than others and will be crowded. If you are looking for a more secluded experience, which we prefer, try to speak to some locals who can point you towards unknown dark spots around the area. Expect to drive atleast 30 minutes out of town to get a good spot.

One of the other great ways to experience Aurora this is by booking an Aurora viewing tour. We booked with the “Aurora Camp Portrait Photography Tour” via @Tripadvisor. It’s a bit expensive, but is a good option due to the amenities you get. It’s not going to be fun if you keep having to run to your car because standing outside is too cold. Picture this: a warm cabin, hot tea, coffee, snacks, and the night sky transforming into a masterpiece of greens and purples. Keep your fingers crossed for a clear night—the magic of the lights is worth it.

Pro Tip: Check the @explorefairbanks website for real-time aurora tracking to enhance your chances of catching the lights.

MiscGyan Tip: If you don’t catch the lights in the first go, try the next night. We had to wait until the 4th night to see the Aurora because it was partly or mostly cloudy on the other nights. So, we would explore during the day time and chase lights at night. Your sleep schedule, if you have one, will be smashed.

So, what else to do in Alaska? Read on.

Day 2: Chena Hot Springs & Aurora Ice Museum

Start your day with a leisurely drive to Chena Hot Springs. The hot springs, located about an hour and a half from Fairbanks, are the perfect way to relax after a late night exploration. As you immerse yourself in the warm, mineral-rich waters, you’ll feel the cold air around you and watch as snowflakes gently fall—a magical, uniquely Alaskan experience.

Once you’ve soaked in the beauty (and the warmth), head over to the Aurora Ice Museum nearby. This whimsical museum, made entirely of ice, is a feast for the eyes with its intricate sculptures and glowing ice structures. To top it off, sip a cocktail served in an ice glass—because when in Alaska, why not?

Chena Hot springs Resort is a popular lodging place for tourists and is usually booked to capacity. If you are making reservations in advance, try to stay here. You might be able to view Aurora while you are in the warm water. Don’t forget to hydrate as you wouldn’t wanna pass out due to dehydration.

Pro Tip: Make sure to try the aurora-themed drinks offered at the ice bar!

Day 3: The Denali National Park

Even though Denali National Park may be closed during winter, the area surrounding it still offers awe-inspiring views. After breakfast, take a scenic drive along the park’s edges, where snow-capped mountains and pristine wilderness stretch as far as the eye can see. Denali is one of Alaska’s crowning jewels, and even if you’re just passing by, it’s worth every minute. If you plan to visit in summer, Denali opens up a whole world of hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and endless exploration.

In the afternoon, head back to Fairbanks for a night of rest, or explore the local eateries and breweries.

Food Tip: We stumped upon this amazing bar restaurant called The Library, right in the middle of Fairbanks. The food was amazing and the drinks were even better.

Day 4: Have you ever been to the Arctic Circle?

Did you know you can cross into the Arctic Circle from Fairbanks? Start early on this all-day adventure as you journey north into one of the most remote regions of Alaska. You’ll need a guided tour for this one. This will take you through rugged landscapes, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of wildlife which get scarce up North. Standing on the Arctic Circle itself is an unforgettable experience and one for the memories, so don’t miss this chance to step into one of the world’s most unique locations.

Return to Fairbanks with your heart full of memories and your mind dreaming of your next adventure.

Bonus Day (Day 5): Winter Activities or Helicopter Tour

If you have a fifth day, spend it enjoying some quintessential Alaskan winter activities like dog sledding or snowmobiling (weather permitting). Alternatively, book a helicopter tour with one of the tour companies. @talkeetnaair or @northern.alaska are some great options for a bird’s-eye view of glaciers, mountains, and pristine wilderness. This aerial adventure is especially great in summer when Alaska’s landscape comes alive with vibrant greenery.

The Road Back Home

Alaska has a way of staying with you. As we packed up and headed home, our hearts were full of awe-inspiring moments, from chasing the Northern Lights to soaking in Chena Hot Springs. This winter journey balanced adventure, relaxation, and incredible natural beauty.
